While the vital organs all play a distinct and important function, it’s hard to separate them out from each other completely – each organ supports the others in critical ways, and no one organ can fully do its job without the help of the others. While this is true of the entire system of bodily organs, it’s particularly true of the kidneys and the heart. The kidneys and the heart have a special relationship in the body, working symbiotically to keep you healthy and your body running smoothly.
Both the heart and the kidneys play important roles in the cardiovascular system, which is the system of veins, arteries, and organs that moves blood, oxygen, and nutrients throughout the body. The heart is the pump that drives the entirety of the cardiovascular system – by beating steadily, the heart moves blood through the veins and helps deliver vital nutrients and oxygen to every cell in the body. The kidneys act as filters for the blood in the cardiovascular system. As blood passes through the kidneys, they filter away excess salt, water, toxins, and waste products, then siphon these down toward the bladder for disposal. In this way, the heart and kidneys work together to deliver clean, oxygenated blood to the body.
Because these two organs are so closely linked, failure of either organ can closely impact the other. If the kidneys are damaged or stop working correctly, the body will release hormones that increase blood pressure in an attempt to supply more blood to the kidneys. This increase in blood pressure causes the heart to work harder, eventually damaging it and potentially leading to heart failure. That’s why it’s so critical to keep the kidneys healthy – and if they do fail, to seek treatment immediately.
